The Rounds #002 | City Cycling Stories

January 29, 2017  |  By Blair Smith

Curated by us for you, this edition of The Rounds features four stories from the city cycling world. Most importantly there’s the Dutch Reach…a simple, effective action drivers can do to stop cyclist fatalities. See how IKEA ended up making a bicycle–the SLADDA. Find out why riding a bicycle is a great cure for creative block. And there’s the 8 do’s and don’ts of winter cycling.

The Story of SLADDA, IKEA’s Everyday Bicycle

Or, as they playfully state in the video…How IKEA ended up making a bike. We know you’ve got two questions. Yes, the SLADDA comes flat-packed. And SLADDA means ‘to skid sideways’ in Swedish. Hopefully there’s not much of that in your future when you’re riding your SLADDA.

The 8 Do’s and Don’ts for Winter Cycling Guide

City cycling in winter in CopenhagenJust because it’s winter in many parts of the world, doesn’t mean that you have to put your bicycle in storage. City sustainability innovator Evergreen and Sweet Pete’s bike shop in Toronto put together a guide offering a few adjustments you can make to enjoy a coldest day of the year ride in late January or early February! Oh…one thing we disagree with is don’t stress about tires. Studded tires are an absolute must to enjoy cycling in winter.

One Thing Drivers Can Do to Save Cyclists’ Lives

The Dutch Reach illustration

Thousands of city cyclists are killed by car doors (a.k.a. “dooring”) each year. There’s a simple solution to this problem known as The Dutch Reach. It’s taught to drivers in the Netherlands to protect cyclists. If more drivers watch this Dutch Reach video (with an unexpected Ryan Reynolds cameo) the number of cyclist deaths around the world could be massively reduced.
